Message from the Chairman

Since 1958, JEPIC has been conducting research on the electric power industry in foreign countries and cooperating with foreign electric utilities and related organizations, with a specific mission in mind. Our mission is to contribute to the sound operation and development of Japan’s electric power industry, its economic growth, and the betterment of people’s lives, while promoting international cooperation. We have been able to carry out this mission through our activities thanks to the continuous support of our member companies and the tireless efforts of our staff. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to them all.
When considering the current status of the global electric power industry, although there are signs of a slowdown in decarbonization the overall trend towards it has continued. The protection of the fossil fuel industry under the Trump administration in the United States, the review of the previous administration’s decarbonization policies, and the renewed awareness of the need to strengthen energy security and industrial competitiveness in Europe, exemplify the slowdown. However, energy companies, including electric utilities, play a major role in enacting decarbonization, enhancing various technologies and measures from upstream to downstream sectors. In particular, it is worth mentioning that the expansion of renewable energy and nuclear power, the reduction of fossil fuel usage, network upgrades and expansion, and improvement of electricity markets, have been progressing worldwide.
Meanwhile, the international situation is in chaos amid deepening global division and geopolitical risks. For example, the United States’ high tariff policy, its moves to review security policies, its intensifying conflict with China, the protracted Russia-Ukraine war, continued instability in the Middle East, and the growing presence of emerging and developing countries known as the Global South. There is a great deal of interest in how these factors will impact the challenges that energy companies and electric utilities around the world commonly face and seek solutions to, namely ensuring energy security (Security), addressing climate change (Sustainability), and providing fair access to sustainable energy for all people (Affordability).
JEPIC is committed to investigating and analyzing the latest fact-based information on the overseas electricity business, while taking into account the business environment and challenges faced by member companies. It is particularly crucial in these turbulent times to consider how overseas operators are facing and resolving various challenges, and to disseminate those insights in a timely manner. This subsequently contributes to the strategy planning and business development of our member companies. In our international cooperation projects, we will utilize the friendly relationships and personal connections we have built up to date to become a hub for cooperation activities in human resource development and technical know-how in developing countries. Our goal is to collaborate with our member companies on their international contributions and increase the presence of Japanese electric utilities. We believe that the active participation and growth of each and every employee are essential to these activities. We will manage our organization in a way that continually improves the quality of our work by developing and retaining talented personnel and increasing their motivation.
